Wednesday, February 22, 2006: There are so many things wrong with this: Teachers salaries will "...primarily be based on how their students perform on standardized tests and other measurements." You can't base a student's performance solely on standardized testing. Other measurements? What is the most effective way of monitoring student progress? Some students (like I was) do not test well. There is too much pressure. Would student evaluations help in this process? No. Who goes through the evaluations and even at that, which evaluations are even valid? I don't see anything wrong with using experience and education as part of the determination of salary. There are the teachers that just show up from 8-3:30 and only do the minimal required of him or her. They could just get lucky and get a class of students that learn what is needed get by. Is that fair to the teacher who puts their heart in to their work and is at school from 7-5? It reminds me of working at WPS and because of the union, salary was based on time spent in the company. Performance was never considered. The slacker sitting next to me was getting paid the same wage as I was even though I was there everyday and working most of that time. Makes me glad of two things: 1) I don't work at WPS anymore and 2) I don't live in Florida. posted by Maryanne @ 10:49 AM | | |
