Thursday, June 26, 2008: We received the latest edition of our local newspaper today. The front page headline reads: "Soldier injured in Iraq receives hero's welcome". The article is about a local US Army SPC who was injured while driving a military vehicle. Due to the nature of his injuries, he has returned home for a 30 day convalescent leave. He was welcomed home on Saturday with an escort by police, fire trucks, and members of the American Legion. Really, the details aren't as important as the message that Saturday's parade seems to give. While this soldier is a hero, there are others in our same community that have served in the military, have come home, and were not given the same heartwarming reception. Was it just because he was injured? Why can't all of our millitary members receive the same welcome home? Whether you believe in the war or not, we need to support the men and women who are serving our country and fighting for the freedoms that we have and often take for granted. posted by Maryanne @ 4:23 PM | | |
