Sunday, October 16, 2005: Normally, I would associate this headline with something from The Onion. Sadly enough, it's from the Wisconsin State Journal. Kellenberg Memorial High School in Uniondale, NY has cancelled prom for this year because they're fed up with the sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll that has become of prom festivities. "Fed up with the revealing evening gowns, flashy tuxedos, strech limos, alcohol, drugs, sex and rowdy house parties.." Yes, this is a Catholic High School. Kellenberg's administration has sent parents two letters that can be found here. There's going to be less tolerance for the taboo, but I don't think it's just a Catholic/religious thing. Have all prom's become a rite of passage for teens? Is this something I'm going to have to worry about 16-18 years from now why my daughter is getting ready for her prom? Do kids really need to spend an enormous amount of money on one night that in 5-10 years is going to be virtually meaningless? I remember when I told my friends (there was a group that was going stag) that I wasn't going to prom that they told me that I would regret it. It's been about 14 years since and looking back, I don't regret it one bit. posted by Maryanne @ 3:59 PM | | |
