Wednesday, February 22, 2006: There are so many things wrong with this: Teachers salaries will "...primarily be based on how their students perform on standardized tests and other measurements." You can't base a student's performance solely on standardized testing. Other measurements? What is the most effective way of monitoring student progress? Some students (like I was) do not test well. There is too much pressure. Would student evaluations help in this process? No. Who goes through the evaluations and even at that, which evaluations are even valid? I don't see anything wrong with using experience and education as part of the determination of salary. There are the teachers that just show up from 8-3:30 and only do the minimal required of him or her. They could just get lucky and get a class of students that learn what is needed get by. Is that fair to the teacher who puts their heart in to their work and is at school from 7-5? It reminds me of working at WPS and because of the union, salary was based on time spent in the company. Performance was never considered. The slacker sitting next to me was getting paid the same wage as I was even though I was there everyday and working most of that time. Makes me glad of two things: 1) I don't work at WPS anymore and 2) I don't live in Florida. posted by Maryanne @ 10:49 AM | | Cruel Now, I'm not a fan of PETA but this is just cruel. posted by Maryanne @ 9:01 AM | | Tuesday, February 21, 2006: Daily Kitten This site is really cute posted by Maryanne @ 9:07 PM | | Saturday, February 18, 2006: New Formula We are trying a new formula and this seems to help for the most part. She spits up a lot less and we really haven't had a bad crying spell since. Hopefully we will continue on this path. Sarah is now 8lbs 7oz (as of last weekend) and still growing. She'll go for her two month appt and shots in a couple of weeks. posted by Maryanne @ 3:25 PM | | Dude, we got a Dell We finally have invested in a laptop and got ourselves a Dell. Nothing too fancy, just enough for internet capabilities and basic operations. I'm sure Terry would be able to elaborate on this as my computer knowledge is minimal (I'm lucky I'm able to post this). One nice thing is that we can get an interest free loan through WEA and the payments will come right out of my check. Typing has already proven to be challenging as this is a smaller keyboard. Perhaps now that we have the laptop, I'll be posting more or at least able to check my email more often. posted by Maryanne @ 3:16 PM | | Sunday, February 05, 2006: Crying Game Sarah is one month old today. We have made some recent discoveries that she suffers from colic...or should I say, we all suffer. At first we were blaming it on a possible milk intolerance. After reading up on the subject, I came to the conclusion that she has all the classic symptoms of colic. I sure wish they had a miracle drug to cure this but it's all a matter of waiting. Hopefully she'll be done with this by three months so we can really start enjoying her. posted by Maryanne @ 10:47 AM | | |
