Saturday, March 04, 2006: I just came home from what would have been a very pleasant evening at The Casbah. Let me explain and start from the beginning. Since Terry had an evening out last Friday, I decided that I needed a turn to go out. I sent out an email to the girls and we decided on The Casbah for dinner and drinks. The Casbah is a Mediterranean restaurant in downtown Madison. I have been there before and have had good experiences. We were seated on the lower level which has traditional seating (low tables and sitting on the floor with cushons). The waitstaff was good about getting water filled, silverware on the table, and taking our drink order. After that it went downhill. We arrived at 8:00 and didn't get our food till 9:30. Considering that we only ordered drinks and no appetizers seems like a long time to me. The waitress didn't come and offer us more to drink nor did she make any apologies for the delay. At one point we had thought they had forgotten us. Some of us had considered ordering dessert; however, we didn't want to wait 45 minutes to get it. Unfortunately since we were a table of 8, there was a 18% gratituity automatically tacked on to the total bill (not to mention the fact that they will not do separate checks). In retrospect, maybe we should have requested to speak to a manager...perhaps we could have been compensated by taking some of our drinks off the bill. We did learn that there was a birthday party being held upstairs and that they were short staffed. These things are understandable but we should have been told this during dinner, not left hanging and wondering when we were going to get our food. Terry and I have talked about the fact that you go to a restaurant for the convenience and service. Most of the time those that are ambitious and able enough can cook most meals at home. In summary: I enjoyed having a night out and catching up with friends, but I wish that the service would have been better. Next time we'll have to go elsewhere. posted by Maryanne @ 9:59 PM | | |
